The Holy Spirit and Healing

This week we are studying how the Holy Spirit works through healing.  If you are a believer, you probably know these scriptures:

Isaiah 53:5New International Version (NIV)

  • But he was piercedfor our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.

1 Peter 2:24New International Version (NIV)

  • 24 “He himself bore our sins”in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”

These scriptures are very important when talking about healing, and we have a wonderful pleasure of studying this on this very special weekend.  This weekend, many call it Easter; we have the chance to celebrate the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.  We don’t all know when these 3 days took place, but we know what happened in them.  Jesus was killed brutally on a cross, a sinless man, to take on our sins in His body.  He paid the price for our sins, so that we could be forgiven and have a relationship with God.  It was not easy for Him, though.  He was badly abused, but that beating He took was for our healing.  In Isaiah we saw that He prophesied about Christ that, “by His wounds we are healed”, while Peter, the apostle told us that “by His would we have been healed”, meaning it was already done.  So when Jesus took those lashes and beatings, He was doing it so that we may walk in health.  He loved us so much that He did this for us while we were still sinners.  We didn’t even have to accept Him before He bore those wounds.

The best news is that He went to Hell and conquered satan and his demon army, and was raised on the third day.  Halleluiah!!  What a great day!  And that is why we celebrate.  Jesus conquered Hell so that we may have life and life abundantly, and so we may walk out our days in health.

Today we have a wonderful guest, Pastor Craig Burns from Vienna, VA.    (Explain)

If time:

God has different names in the Bible, mostly the Old Testament, but they are used to describe Him and His different actions.  Jehova is one that is used interchangeably with Lord and Yahweh.  It is a general term that can be followed by a more specific term to describe Him.  The name Jehova Rapha is translated The Lord that Heals.

Romans 8:11

  • 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the deadis living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of[a] his Spirit who lives in you.

Song: “Jehova Rapha” by Sara Heart Pearson.

Romans 8:1-2New International Version (NIV)

  • Therefore, there is now no condemnationfor those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you[a] free from the law of sin and death.

Romans 8:6New International Version (NIV)

  • The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20New International Version (NIV)

  • 19 Do you not know that your bodies are templesof the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

We have talked a lot about the Holy Spirit.   Let’s just point out some of the things we have discovered so far.  We have the Holy Spirit in us when we are saved, but we must be filled with the Holy Spirit to become an empowered Christian.  We must give of ourselves fully to Christ, and let the Holy Spirit take control.  He will comfort, guide, and intercede for us.  Together with the Holy Spirit, we can take the World by storm.  It’s not just a suggestion, it’s a command!  God loves us so much; He wants us to enjoy our time here on earth.  He doesn’t want to be an insurance policy.  He wants to have a close personal relationship with each of us.  He made us!  He loves us!
